ID Cards (ADFA Card)

The ADFA card fulfils many uses and serves as a means of identification, allows access to the Academy Library resources and enables access into controlled areas (such as computer laboratories). The ADFA card is the sole form of accepted identification for services provided at UNSW@ADFA (such as the ICTS Help Desk, attending examinations etc.).

Students should note that is a condition of enrolment at UNSW@ADFA that you obtain and retain an ADFA Card for the entirety of your study with UNSW@ADFA. Failure to obtain a card will limit your access to services severely and may result in termination of your enrolment.

Obtaining an ADFA Card

If you are on campus, present yourself to the ICTS Helpdesk and have a photo taken. If we can verify that you are a valid student we can give you a card immediately.

If you cannot come to the ICTS Helpdesk, send a passport photo of yourself, together with your student number and contact details, to the ICTS Helpdesk. Please DO NOT send any other type of photo as it cannot be used. The address to post this information to is:

Helpdesk,
ICT Services, UNSW@ADFA,
Australian Defence Force Academy,
Canberra ACT 2600.

Alternatively, you can email a passport photo of yourself, along with your student number and contact details to helpdesk@adfa.edu.au. The JPEG file needs the following minimum specifications 328 wide x 370 high in true colour.

In all instances the card will be mailed to you unless you advise the ICTS Helpdesk that you wish to collect the card. When you receive your new ADFA card you will also receive a Personal Identification Number (PIN) which you may need to access buildings at the Academy.

This number must be kept secure, in the same way that you would treat the PIN for your credit card.

Lost, Stolen or Damaged Cards

All instances of lost, stolen or damaged cards should be reported to the ICTS HelpDesk immediately (02 6268 8140 or helpdesk@adfa.edu.au) who will disable the card and commence the process for issuing a new card.

Cards which are rendered unusable, or fail due to damage sustained to the Card as a result of students punching holes in the Cards, will be subject to a $10 replacement fee. Students who wish to carry their Card in a convenient manner, should use a Card cradle which does not damage the card or require any hole to be punched in the card. These cradles are available free of charge from the ICTS HelpDesk.

The University will replace a Card at no cost to the student, where the Card has failed or is rendered unusable due to fair and reasonable wear and tear and where the Card has not been defaced or damaged as a result of hole punching by the student.

Accessing Buildings Using Your ADFA card

Upon issue, your card will be activated immediately. When you receive your new ADFA card you will also receive a Personal Identification Number (PIN). This number is to be kept secure in the same way that you would treat the PIN for your credit card. To gain after-hours access to any building within the academy, you will be required to contact that School / Centre and arrange to have the relevant permissions given to you from that centre.

All students are automatically be given 24-hour access to computer labs G02 and G03 under Lecture Theatres North.

Slowly swipe the card from top to bottom of the reader with the magnetic strip facing to the right. You should then hear a single beep and the light next to the ‘Enter’ will flash – the door will be unlocked. If the light next to “PIN required” flashes, there is a keypad located next to the reader, enter your PIN and then press the IN key – the door should then unlock.

If you swipe the card and get a single long beep, please note which light is flashing. If it is;

  • “Try again” - please ensure the card is facing the right way, slowly swipe card again. If you still can’t access door, please contact the authorised CARDAX staff member of that building during business hours.
  • “Disallowed” - Please contact the authorised CARDAX staff member of that building during business hours.

Once the staff member has checked your access permissions and your card still does not work, please contact the ICTS Helpdesk in person.
