Cross-Institutional Language Studies

Undergraduate students who are enrolled in either Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Business or Bachelor of Science programs may apply for military and academic approval to undertake cross-institutional language studies at either the Australian National University or the University of Canberra. Due to the structure of the Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Technology programs, it is not possible for students enrolled in these programs to undertake language studies.

Important Points to Note

  • Approval will only be granted if the student has prior knowledge of the language (either through completing formal study in the language in the recent past or through recent usage);
  • Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science students may only undertake cross-institutional language studies towards either a Minor or a Major and the student must provide a copy of their proposed degree structure when submitting the application for cross-institutional study;
  • Bachelor of Business students may undertake cross-institutional language studies as the 'non-business electives' in their program, but should note that the studies undertaken in the language will not be listed on their testamur (the degree certificate), but will be listed on the academic transcript. The student must provide a copy of their proposed degree structure when submitting the application for cross-institutional study;
  • Approval will only be granted when the courses undertaken at the other institution DO NOT cause a timetable conflict with the student's UNSW@ADFA courses;
  • Students are responsible for the payment of the General Services Fee (ANU) or the Amenities & Services Fee (UC) themselves and this fee will not be paid by ADFA;
  • Students undertaking cross-institutional language study in their final session may have their graduation delayed until the results of their study are released by the other institution.

The Application Process
The following process should be undertaken ASAP in order to allow sufficient time for military and academic approvals to be granted prior to submitting paperwork to the other University.

1. Ensure that you are fully conversant with the information listed on this page;
2. Contact the relevant Language academics at the other University and ascertain which course(s) you should be undertaking.
Please note that in many cases you will need to undertake a language assessment test.
3. Complete the UNSW@ADFA Cross-Institutional Language Enrolment Approval form;
4. Obtain and complete the relevant Cross-Institutional Non-Award Enrolment form from either the Australian National University or the University of Canberra;
5. Complete the relevant UNSW@ADA Proposed Degree Structure form;
6. Submit the forms listed in items 3 to 5 above to your Divisional Officer to obtain Military approval;
7. Once you have gained Military approval, submit the forms (bearing the approval) to Student Administrative Services.
ALLOW ONE WEEK FOR PROCESSING.
8. If approval is granted, you will receive a written authority from Student Administrative Services outlining the conditions of your study and your Cross-Institutional Non-Award Enrolment form for the other University will be returned to you.
9. You should then submit the written authority AND the Cross-Institutional Non-Award Enrolment form to the other University in accordance with their published deadlines.
